In a significant overhaul of the secondary education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced sweeping reforms to its board examination structure, effective from the 2027-28 academic year. The changes, aimed at reducing student stress and promoting holistic learning, were unveiled earlier today in a press conference held at the CBSE headquarters in Delhi. This move comes in response to long-standing concerns about the exam-centric nature of Indian education and aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a modular exam system for Classes 10 and 12. Instead of a single, high-stakes exam at the end of the year, students will now have the option to take subject-wise exams in multiple slots throughout the academic year. The best score from each attempt will be considered for the final result. This allows students to focus on one subject at a time and reduces the pressure associated with the traditional year-end format.

Modular Exams: A Flexible Approach to Assessment

The modular system is designed to provide students with greater flexibility and control over their learning journey. The CBSE will conduct three exam windows – in November, February, and May. Students are free to choose when they want to appear for each subject, and they can even opt to retake an exam to improve their score. Detailed guidelines regarding registration, exam schedules, and the syllabus for each module will be released by the CBSE by June 2026.

Speaking to News Reporter Live, Professor Anita Sharma, a member of the CBSE curriculum committee, said, "The aim is to shift the focus from rote learning to conceptual understanding. We want students to enjoy the learning process and not be bogged down by exam stress."

Emphasis on Practical and Skill-Based Learning

Another key aspect of the reform is the increased emphasis on practical and skill-based learning. The CBSE will be introducing more project-based assessments and incorporating practical components into the exams. This will encourage students to apply their knowledge to real-world situations and develop critical thinking skills. The weightage given to theory and practical components will be adjusted to a 60:40 ratio, reportersays, ensuring that practical learning receives due importance.

Furthermore, the board will be partnering with various educational institutions and industry experts to develop new and innovative assessment methods. This includes incorporating technology-based assessments and gamified learning modules to make the learning process more engaging and effective. This focus aligns with the Skill India Mission and aims to make students more employable.

CBSE's Efforts to Reduce Exam Stress and Anxiety

Recognizing the immense pressure students face during board exams, the CBSE is also launching a comprehensive mental health support program. This program will include counseling services, workshops on stress management, and awareness campaigns to promote positive mental health among students. The CBSE has also announced a dedicated helpline for students and parents to address any concerns or queries related to the new exam system. Information about Scholarships & Financial Aid will also be readily available to ensure financial constraints do not add to student stress.

The CBSE reforms also consider the diverse learning needs of students. Special provisions will be made for students with disabilities, including extended time, assistive devices, and alternative assessment methods. The board is committed to ensuring that all students have a fair and equal opportunity to succeed. As of today, March 26, 2026, pilot programs are being established in select schools across Delhi and Mumbai to test the efficacy of the modular system before its full-scale implementation.
