CBSE Board Exam: Major Reforms Announced for 2027-28

New Delhi, April 2, 2026 – In a significant overhaul of the secondary education system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced sweeping reforms to its Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, effective from the 2027-28 academic year. The changes aim to reduce rote learning, promote critical thinking, and align the assessment system with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Students will now have the option to take board exams in two parts: one at the end of Class 9 and another at the end of Class 10. This will allow for a more evenly distributed workload and reduce the pressure of a single high-stakes exam. The weightage for internal assessments will also increase, accounting for 30% of the final score, up from the current 20%. The remaining 70% will be based on the board exams.

For Class 12, the CBSE is introducing more application-based and case study questions in all subjects. The objective is to assess students' ability to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. The board is also exploring the possibility of offering specialized streams in Class 11, allowing students to focus on areas of interest such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Design Thinking. These specialized streams will be aligned with the skills required for the future workforce.

Competency-Based Questions and Skill Development

The CBSE will significantly increase the proportion of competency-based questions in both Class 10 and Class 12 exams. These questions will assess students' ability to analyze, interpret, and apply concepts. The board will provide sample papers and practice materials to help students prepare for this new format. Workshops and training sessions will also be conducted for teachers to equip them with the necessary skills to teach and assess competency-based learning.

These reforms are expected to have a ripple effect on competitive exams such as IIT JEE and NEET, as well as university admissions processes. The emphasis on conceptual understanding and application-based learning will better prepare students for these challenges. The CBSE is working with the National Testing Agency (NTA) to ensure that the syllabus and assessment patterns for these exams are aligned with the new CBSE curriculum.
