CBSE Board Exam: Major Reforms Announced for 2027

New Delhi, Saturday, April 4, 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant reforms to the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams, set to be implemented starting the academic year 2027. These changes aim to reduce rote learning, promote conceptual understanding, and align the assessment system with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The reforms are expected to affect millions of students across India and affiliated schools abroad.

Speaking at a press conference this week, CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi stated, “Our goal is to create a more holistic and student-centric assessment system. We want students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts, not just their ability to memorize facts. These reforms are a step in that direction.” He emphasized that the changes are based on extensive feedback from teachers, students, and parents. Emphasis on Competency-Based Questions

One of the key changes is the increased weightage given to competency-based questions. These questions, which assess students' abilities to apply concepts to real-life situations, will now constitute at least 40% of the question paper in both Class 10 and Class 12. This includes multiple choice questions, case studies, and scenario-based problems. The remaining portion will comprise a mix of short answer questions and long answer questions designed to test recall and understanding. This shift aims to move away from traditional, memory-based testing methods.

“We believe that competency-based questions will encourage students to think critically and creatively,” explained Dr. Anita Karwal, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. “This approach will better prepare them for higher education and the demands of the 21st-century workforce.”

Introduction of Modular Exams

In another significant reform, the CBSE is considering the introduction of modular exams for select subjects in Class 12. Under this system, students will be able to take exams in different modules or units of a subject throughout the year, rather than taking a single comprehensive exam at the end of the academic year. This will reduce the pressure on students and allow them to focus on specific areas of study. A pilot program for modular exams is expected to be launched in select schools in the 2026-27 academic year before being rolled out nationwide.

Revised Assessment Criteria and Evaluation Process

The CBSE is also revising the assessment criteria and evaluation process to ensure greater fairness and objectivity. Teachers will receive comprehensive training on how to evaluate competency-based questions and provide constructive feedback to students. Meanwhile, several educational experts have lauded the CBSE's decision to reform the board exams. “These changes are long overdue,” said Professor Rajesh Kumar, a leading educationist at Delhi University. “The current system puts too much emphasis on rote learning and does not adequately assess students’ critical thinking skills. The new reforms will help to create a more meaningful and relevant learning experience for students.”

The Ministry of Education is also encouraging students to explore various Scholarships & Financial Aid options to support their education. Several government schemes, such as the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme, offer financial assistance to deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
